Protecting Lives with Routine Immunization Services

Karachi, one of Pakistan's largest metropolitan cities with a population of ~20 million, faces significant public health challenges, particularly in the area of routine immunization. Approximately 50% of Karachi’s population resides in 988 informal settlements (slums), with only 6% officially registered or legally regularized. Certain union councils—including Gujro, Songal, Manghopir, Ittehad Town, Chisti Nagar, Islamia Colony, Muzaffarabad, and Muslimabad—have been identified as Super High Risk Union Councils (SHRUCs) due to critically low immunization coverage.

Our Immunization Objectives

Enhance Routine Immunization Coverage

We work to ensure more children receive timely and complete vaccinations.

Deploy Full-Time Vaccinators

Trained vaccinators are placed full-time to provide consistent immunization services.

Targeted Interventions in SHRUCs

We focus on underserved urban communities to improve health service access.

Community Feedback and Coordination

We engage communities to gather feedback and coordinate better services.

In Gujro, a densely populated area near Karachi, preventable diseases like measles and pneumonia were once common. Fozia, a young mother, had never heard of the free Expanded Programme on immunization (EPI) and was unaware of the protection vaccines could offer her newborn daughter, Asiya. That changed when a VITAL Pakistan Trust vaccinator visited her home, patiently explaining the safety and importance of immunization. Encouraged, Fozia brought Asiya to the nearest EPI centre. As Asiya grew healthier, Fozia began encouraging other mothers to do the same. Thanks to VPT’s outreach and the EPI programme, vaccine awareness in Gujro is growing—and so is hope. Fozia’s story shows how one informed choice can spark a healthier future for an entire community.
