Research Initiative

Portfolio

Research Initiative2022–2025
PRISMA (2022–2025)
Impact: 6,000 pregnant women
PRISMA, a multi-country research initiative, focused on improving maternal and newborn health by identifying key risk factors during pregnancy and the first year postpartum. Conducted in five countries — including Pakistan (Ibrahim Hyderi and Rehri Goth) — the study aimed to generate high-quality, population-based data from 6,000 pregnant women.
Key Outcomes: Successfully developed a harmonized dataset that provided critical insights into maternal and neonatal vulnerabilities in low- and middle-income countries. Using advanced analytical methods, including machine learning, PRISMA supported the creation of early risk prediction tools to guide care strategies.

Health Program2014–2018
CAPLOW (2014–2018)
Impact: 41% reduction in mortality
VITAL Pakistan, in partnership with Aga Khan University, implemented a maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) program in Rehri Goth, Karachi. Using a continuum-of-care model, the program aimed to reduce under-5 mortality and improve healthcare access.
Key Outcomes: Over four years, under-5 mortality dropped by 41% — from 109 to 64 deaths per 1,000 live births. Skilled delivery rates rose from 43% to 70%, and vaccination coverage (up to Penta-3) increased from 23% to 55%.

Clinical Trial2018–2020
MUMTA LW Trial (2018–2020)
Impact: Nutrition Evidence
This community-based trial focused on addressing maternal undernutrition and its impact on newborn health. Conducted in Ibrahim Hyderi and Rehri Goth, Karachi, the study targeted pregnant women in low-income areas to evaluate the effect of nutritional support on maternal and infant outcomes.
Key Outcomes: The randomized controlled trial tested different supplement strategies to reduce risks of stunting and wasting in infants. It aimed to generate evidence for effective interventions in settings with high rates of malnutrition and under-5 mortality.

Clinical Trial2022–2025
MUMTA PW Trial (2022–2025)
Impact: 1,836 women enrolled
This trial focused on improving perinatal outcomes by addressing maternal undernutrition through nutritional supplementation. Conducted in Ibrahim Hyderi and Rehri Goth, the study enrolled 1,836 pregnant women from low-income communities in Karachi.
Key Outcomes: The randomized, four-arm trial evaluated the impact of fortified balanced energy protein (BEP) supplements during pregnancy. The goal was to reduce small-for-gestational-age births and generate evidence for effective antenatal nutrition interventions.
